7 Reasons Why You Don't Meditate (and what you can do about it) Part 7: "My friend/partner/

The thing about meditation is you have to do it for yourself. You can’t do it for anyone else and no one else can do it for you. If you are starting a meditation practice because someone thinks you should, will, in most cases, lead to disappointment. It’s part of the whole “having an expectation on the outcome” thing. If you seek out a class or regimen because someone thinks you should can lead to guilt and anxiety if you don’t, or don’t find the modality that works for you.
Having said that, going to a class at the prodding of another might just be the kick start you need to get going! Keep in mind, your growth is for you and you alone. Others may benefit from it, but if you’re not doing it for yourself, you’ll eventually fall off your practice (not to mention resent the person you were doing it for) in the long run.
Meditation, or any personal growth for that matter, should never be an obligation, only an opportunity. If you can find the opportunity, there will be no obligation. It’s the difference between “I have to practice meditation” and “I have a meditation I can practice”. Make both statements out loud and notice the difference in the body’s reaction. Which one feels better? There you go!
If you find yourself having any of these arguments against meditating, it’s my desire that you’ve gained an answer and maybe have overcome the reason not to get started. If so, look up our class schedule at www.pointoflifecenter.com to see when they next beginner’s class is happening. I hope to see you there!
